TEACHER-SCHOLAR PROGRAM: PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The WSEC Director Responsibilities:
The Director of the Wooster Science Education Center (WSEC) manages the Teacher-Scholar
Program (TSP). The Director will:
• Update the Partnerships in Science Committee (PSC) about the TSP and
receive advise as needed;
• Update the TSP informational materials;
• Inform The College of Wooster (COW) students about the TSP;
• Inform area teachers about the TSP;
• Inform the Faculty Mentor about the TSP;
• Help the Scholar and Faculty Mentor complete the IDPT application process;
• Organize and implement the student (Scholar) and cooperating teacher
(Teacher) application and selection process;
• Conduct an orientation meeting in the spring to help match Scholars
& Teachers;
• Conduct two program meetings for all program participants;
• Hold monthly meetings (4) to train Scholars in professional classroom
behavior, inquiry learning, explain course assignments, and provide ongoing
support;
• Aid the Faculty Mentor as needed;
• Disburse funds to Teachers for science instruction supplies to support
program goals;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the TSP by developing and administering
initial and final program assessments; and
• Inform the HHMI Director of the program’s progress.
Incentive: Program management is part of the Director’s job description.
2. Scholar Responsibilities:
COW students who are accepted into the TSP are hereafter referred to as Scholars.
To successfully complete the TSP Scholars will:
• Work with Director and Faculty Mentor to complete the IDPT application
process;
• Attend the orientation meeting in early May, 2006, and provide information
to facilitate matching with a Teacher;
• Attend 2 program meetings (August and December, 2006);
• Attend monthly meetings (4) with the WSEC director for training in professional
classroom behavior and explanation of other course assignments;
• Meet with, and submit assignments to the Faculty Mentor as arranged;
• Act professionally in the classroom;
• Serve as a general science content resource for the Teacher, consulting
with Wooster science faculty, Faculty Mentor, or WSEC Director as needed;
• Spend about 3 hours/week, for a total of 39 hours, in the classroom
of their Teacher assisting with science instruction as directed;
• Meet regularly with their teacher outside of classroom time for planning
and review;
• Keep a weekly journal and share with Teacher;
• Use existing classroom resources, prepare a lesson plan and teach a
lesson under the Teacher’s guidance;
• Work with the Teacher to identify, develop, and implement a new hands-on
science lab or activity that meets the Teacher’s instructional needs (supply
funds may be used for this activity);
• Submit a lesson plan for the new activity to the faculty mentor or WSEC
director for approval.
• Submit the approved lesson plan in a form suitable for posting on the
WSEC website;
• Submit a 5 page final paper to the faculty mentor as directed; and
• Participate in program assessment activities.
Incentive: 1-credit, an opportunity to share and apply
science knowledge, and exposure to science education in a real-world setting.
3. Teacher Responsibilities:
Participating Teachers are selected from individuals who apply to attend the
summer workshop and participate in the TSP. Teachers will:
• Attend the Physical Science Workshop;
• Provide information to the WSEC director to facilitate matching with
a Scholar;
• Attend 2 program meetings (August and December, 2006);
• Consult with the WSEC Director and Faculty Mentor as needed;
• Supervise the Scholar assisting with in-class science instruction for
about 3 hours/week for a total of 39 in-class hours;
• Meet regularly with the Scholar outside of class time to plan class
activities and review their journal;
• Help the Scholar prepare a lesson plan and teach a lesson using existing
classroom resources;
• Work with the Scholar to identify, develop, and implement a new hands-on
science activity that meets Teacher’s instructional needs per the Ohio
science standards and write a new lesson plan for this activity (the scholar
will need the lesson approved by the faculty mentor or WSEC director before
teaching the activity);
• Participate in program assessment activities; and
• Submit requests for reimbursements or advances to the WSEC Director
to obtain up to $300 of materials and supplies to develop a new hands-on activity
with the Scholar, support existing needs, or meet other new science instruction
needs. Any incidental expenses incurred by the Teacher-Scholar pair can come
out of the stipend.
Incentive: $300 supply fund for science instruction materials and assistance with hands-on science instruction in the classroom for a semester.
4. Faculty Mentor Responsibilities:
The Faculty Mentor for 2006 will be an active member of the College of Wooster
faculty and will:
• Work with the WSEC director to update the TSP informational materials;
• Work with WSEC director and Scholar to complete the IDPT application
process;
• Participate in the Scholar selection process during spring 2006;
• Attend Scholar orientation meeting in May 2006;
• Attend 2 program meetings (August and December, 2006);
• Set up the schedule for Scholar assignment submission (journal article
reviews and final paper);
• Meet with up to five (5) Scholars as a group per a mutually acceptable
schedule to discuss and review journal articles;
• Provide instructions for final paper guidelines;
• Evaluate Scholars’ assignments and submit final grades (S/NC);
• Assist the WSEC Director and Teachers as needed; and
• Participate in program assessment activities.
Incentive: Receive 0.05 credit per student supervised and support COW outreach activities.
