COW students who are accepted into the TSP are hereafter referred to as
Scholars. To successfully complete the TSP they will:
Work with Director and Faculty Mentor to complete the IDPT application process;
Attend the orientation meeting in early May, 2005 and provide information to facilitate matching with a Teacher;
Attend 2 program workshops (August and December, 2005);
Attend monthly meetings (4) for training in professional classroom behavior and explanation of other course assignments;
Meet with, and submitting assignments to, their Faculty Mentor as arranged;
Act professionally in the classroom;
Serve as a general science instruction resource for the Teacher, consulting with Wooster science faculty, Faculty Mentor, or WSEC Director as needed;
Spend about 3 hours/week, for a total of 39 hours, in the classroom of their Teacher assisting with science instruction as directed;
Keep a weekly journal;
Using existing classroom resources, prepare a lesson plan and teach a lesson under Teacher's guidance;
Work with the Teacher to identify, develop, and implement a new hands-on science lab or activity that meets the Teacher's instructional needs (supply funds may be used for this activity);
Submit the new lab or activity for posting on the WSEC website; and
Participate in program assessment activities.
Incentive: 1-credit and exposure to science education in a real-world setting
2. Teacher Responsibilities
Program Teachers are those individuals selected by the PSC/Director to attend the summer workshop and participate in the TSP. Teachers would be expected to:
Attend the orientation meeting in June of 2005 and provide information to facilitate matching with a Scholar;
Attend 2 program workshops (August and December, 2005);
Consult with the WSEC Director and Faculty Mentor as needed;
Supervise the Scholar assisting with in-class science instruction for about 3 hours/week for a total of 39 in-class hours;
Help the Scholar prepare a lesson plan and teach a lesson using existing classroom resources;
Work with the Scholar to identify, develop, and implement a new hands-on science lab or activity that meets Teacher's instructional needs per the Ohio science standards;
Participate in program assessment activities; and
Obtain up to $500 of materials and supplies to develop the new lab or hands-on activity, support existing needs, or obtain other science instruction-related supplies by submitting requests for reimbursement or advances to the WSEC Director.
Incentive: $500 supply fund for science instruction materials and assistance with hands-on science instruction in the classroom for a semester
3. Faculty Mentor Responsibilities
The Faculty Mentor for 2005 will be a member of the HHMI Steering Committee. The Faculty Mentor will:
Work with Director and Scholar to complete the IDPT application process;
Participate in the Scholar selection process during spring 2005;
Attend Scholar (May) and Teacher (June) orientation meetings;
Attend 2 brief program workshops (August and December, 2005);
Set up schedule for assignment submission;
Meet with up to five (5) Scholars as a group per a mutually acceptable schedule;
Evaluate Scholars' assignments and submit final grades (S/NC);
Assist the WSEC Director and Teachers as needed; and
Participate in program assessment activities.
Incentive: Receive 0.05 credit per student supervised
